School mindfulness: the mixed evidence

What schools have found — both ways. One school trial found gains; a much larger one found no difference. We cite both.

A randomized trial of 99 students in four 4th–5th grade classes found gains in attention-related skills and well-being after a short daily school program (Schonert-Reichl et al. 2015). A UK trial of 8,376 students across 84 schools found school-wide mindfulness no better than usual teaching (Kuyken et al. 2022).

School mindfulness research is mixed, and we show both sides rather than only the positive one. A randomized trial of a short daily program found gains; a much larger trial of a school-wide course found no difference.

The studies

What was tested, and what it found

  1. Schonert-Reichl et al. 2015

Randomized controlled trial of a daily school mindfulness program.

    Who
    4 classes of combined 4th and 5th graders (N = 99), randomly assigned.
    Found
Students who received the program showed gains in cognitive control, stress physiology and social-emotional measures like empathy and optimism, versus a comparison group.

  2. Kuyken et al. 2022

    Cluster randomized controlled trial (MYRIAD).

    Who
    84 schools; 8,376 students aged 11–14.
    Found
A school mindfulness course was no better than usual social-emotional lessons for depression risk, behavior or wellbeing after one year.

Where it stops

How each source applies — and where it stops

  • Schonert-Reichl et al. 2015

How it appliesSome school calming programs have helped; others haven't.A randomized trial with 4th and 5th graders found gains in attention-related skills and well-being after a short daily school program (Schonert-Reichl et al. 2015).

  • Kuyken et al. 2022

How it appliesLonger school wellness courses don't automatically help — brevity matters.A large UK trial found school-wide mindfulness no better than usual teaching (Kuyken et al. 2022) — one reason resets stay brief and practical.

Our next study

Whether a 30–90 second reset avoids the fade-out that full school programs have shown at scale.

How we'll measure it

How Mind Circuit uses this

Both studies tested full programs; whether a brief Micro-Reset™ works is what our own testing will show. The mixed picture is part of why resets stay short and are built around getting back to learning rather than a wellness course.
